Introduction to pyrethroids

14-Sep-2021 AOGRAND
As a tiny flying insect that has lived on the earth for hundreds of millions of years, mosquitoes are spread across many continents in the world. Mosquitoes are the vectors of many diseases. At present, many harmful diseases such as dengue fever, malaria and yellow fever are known. Spread by mosquitoes. In view of the threat of mosquitoes to human health, mosquito repellent and anti-mosquito have always been important topics of people’s attention. In daily life, mosquito nets, mosquito killers, electric mosquito swatters, mosquito coils, etc. have long become common people’s homes with low prices, convenient use, and remarkable effects The practical method of repelling mosquitoes. After being ignited, mosquito coils are incompletely burned to release smoke to achieve the effect of killing mosquitoes, which is inseparable from the unique chemical composition in the smoke. This type of substance actually originated from a unique kind of plant-pyrethrum.

Natural pyrethrum
Natural pyrethrum is a kind of Compositae, native to the Mediterranean region. It was introduced to the United States in 1876, and then it was widely cultivated in Japan, Africa, and South America to form an industry. It was introduced successively in Kenya and Tanzania in Africa in 1940, and introduced in Australia in 1976. It has gradually developed into two large-scale planting areas in Africa and Australia. It has been cultivated and used for more than 150 years.

In our country, the Kunming Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences, introduced it from 1987 to 1988, and was successfully tested in Dali, Yunnan and other places in 1992. Subsequently, the Kunming Institute of Botany completed the development of natural pyrethrum technology and cooperated with enterprises. Since 1999, it has been planted on a large scale in Qujing, Honghe, Yuxi and other places in Yunnan. After nearly 10 years of development, Yunnan has developed into the third largest The planting area of natural pyrethrum production area has reached 60,000 mu, and the product quality has been recognized internationally.

Pyrethroids
Pyrethorid is an organic chemical compound similar to natural pyrethrin (pyrethrin, also called pyrethrin) in the natural pyrethrum genus. It is developed after the structure of natural pyrethrin has been changed. However, natural pyrethrin is unstable in sunlight, so it has not been used in agriculture on a large scale.

In the 1980s, British Elliott used natural pyrethrum as a precursor to synthesize the world's first pyrethroid insecticide. After that, Elliott developed the first light-stable insecticide of this type permethrin in 1972, and then Japan's Sumitomo Chemical Co., Ltd. developed fenvalerate and commercialized it in 1976. This uncovered the research and development of pyrethroids by global pesticide scientists and technicians.

One aspect of the widespread use of pyrethroids is mosquito coils or sprays, the main purpose of which is to kill mosquitoes. Pyrethroids are the main active ingredients of mosquito coils and electric mosquito coils used indoors. The principle of action is to heat the active ingredients into the air in a gaseous form and maintain a certain concentration of the drug in the action space to drive away mosquitoes.

The characteristics of pyrethroids
Efficient
Its insecticidal efficacy is generally 10-50 times higher than that of commonly used insecticides, and it has good quick-acting effect and strong knockdown power. For example, the dosage of deltamethrin is only about 1/15 gram per mu, which is one of the most effective pesticides as of the beginning of the 21st century. The molecule of pyrethroid contains a variety of stereoisomers, and the virulence varies greatly. It is very important to separate or synthesize the highly toxic isomers.

Stable
Compared with natural pyrethroids, pyrethroids have higher stability and can retain the insecticidal activity of natural pyrethroids. It also has relatively low acute toxicity to mammals. Pyrethroids can enter the body through oral, inhalation or skin routes, and are generally excreted from the human body quickly through the liver through hydrolysis, oxidation, and binding.

Broad spectrum
Pyrethroids are a kind of broad-spectrum insecticides that can control a variety of pests. They have a strong contact effect on insects. Some varieties have gastric poisoning or fumigation effects, but they have no systemic effect. Its mechanism of action is to disturb the normal physiology of insect nerves, causing them to die from excitement, convulsion and paralysis.

Safety
Because of its small dosage and low concentration, pyrethroids are safer to humans and animals and have little pollution to the environment. Its disadvantages are mainly high toxicity to fish and damage to certain beneficial insects. Long-term repeated use can also lead to insect resistance.

Application fields of pyrethroids
1. The application of pyrethroids in the control of agricultural pests
Pyrethroids are the deadly enemies of aphids, cabbage caterpillars and other pests, and have strong contact effects on almost all agricultural pests. In the mid-1940s, chemically synthesized pesticides such as organochlorine, organophosphorus, and amino acid methyl esters were all before the advent, and pyrethrins had been widely used to control agricultural pests. Studies have shown that interplanting pyrethrum with crops makes the flowering period of pyrethrum coincide with the occurrence period of crop pests, and the protection rate against aphids and cabbage caterpillars reaches 80%. In addition, pyrethrum stems, stalks, leaves, etc. are ground and buried in the ground before winter can kill overwintering pests.

2. Application of pyrethroids in livestock and poultry breeding
Studies have shown that pyrethroids do not accumulate in mammals (there are enzymes that can decompose pyrethrins in the body), and they are metabolized and excreted when they reach the central nervous system, making them safe for humans and animals. In the insect body, it can enter the nervous system, causing symptoms such as hyperactivity, paralysis, and ultimately killing it. Therefore, it is widely used in livestock and poultry breeding places, and has a unique effect of avoiding and eliminating pests such as mosquitoes and flies that bite and disturb the growth of livestock and poultry all year round. It is beneficial to the rest and growth of livestock and prevents the spread of diseases.

3. Application of pyrethroids in the food industry Food processing plants, canneries, warehouses, cake houses and other food storage places are susceptible to pests such as flies and cockroaches. Pyrethrins decompose fast, have no residue, and have a fresh and natural smell and extremely low toxicity. Therefore, they are used in the food industry to prevent insects. Played a big role.

4. Application of pyrethroids in environmental sanitation
As early as the early 19th century, people discovered that pyrethrins can repel flies, kill mosquitoes, and control bed bugs, lice, fleas and other pests. In Western countries such as the United States, it has become one of the most commonly used household hygiene pesticides. The mosquito coil made from pyrethrins contains high mosquito-killing ingredients in its smoke and has a long time for fumigation, which is an effective way to repel mosquitoes at home. It can also be made into a sanitary spray. A very small amount of pyrethrin can make mosquitoes lose their coordination and kill them. Because pyrethrins have good insecticidal effects, they can be quickly and naturally degraded and have no pollution to the environment. They are also widely used in parks, playgrounds, hotels, offices, toilets, garbage dumps and other public places to kill insects.

The development prospects of pyrethroid pesticides
The development of pyrethroids to today has experienced a series of processes from light instability to light stability, from cyclopropane structure to non-cyclic structure, and is now regarded as a highly effective biomimetic insecticide and has been listed as a highly toxic pesticide by the country. Pyrethroids, which are the main varieties of pesticide replacement, have the characteristics of high efficiency, safety, wide insecticidal spectrum, special structure, and environmental friendliness. They have become a mainstream insecticide, and its development prospects are beyond doubt.
